In 2007, Brian completed a comprehensive blindness training program at the Louisiana Center for the Blind (LCB), a renowned rehabilitation center that equips blind individuals with essential skills. This training provided Brian with crucial skills in Braille, cane travel, assistive technology, and daily living activities.
Brian also completed the Computerized Accounting Program at the Harris School of Business in 2010, receiving a certificate of completion in 2011. This foundation in accounting principles, financial management, and business operations further contributed to his expertise in bookkeeping and financial services.
Personal Background & Journey
Brian was born with Bardet-Biedl Syndrome (BBS), a rare genetic disorder that affects multiple systems in the body, including vision. As a result, he is legally blind, experiencing progressive vision loss. Despite the challenges associated with BBS, Brian has never allowed his condition to define his capabilities. He is passionate about using technology and advocacy to help others overcome barriers and achieve independence.
In addition to his visual impairment, Brian has Asperger’s Syndrome, a condition on the autism spectrum that affects social interactions and communication. However, he has harnessed his strengths—attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and a deep focus on his passions—to excel in both his professional and advocacy work. His ability to adapt, learn, and find creative solutions has made him a valuable leader in various organizations.
Advocacy & Leadership
Brian Mackey is a dedicated advocate for the blind and low vision community, actively engaging in various leadership roles to promote accessibility and inclusion.
In January 2024, he was elected President of the National Federation of the Blind of Pennsylvania (NFB of PA) Greater Berks Chapter, where he leads initiatives to empower blind and low vision individuals and enhance community accessibility.
Brian’s commitment to the National Federation of the Blind extends beyond his local chapter. He currently serves as the affiliate bookkeeper and webmaster for the National Federation of the Blind of New Jersey (NFBNJ), managing financial records and maintaining the organization’s online presence. From 2002 to 2018, he was an active member of NFBNJ, holding multiple leadership positions, including affiliate secretary (2012–2016) and affiliate treasurer (2016–2018). In recognition of his outstanding service, he received the 2018 NFBNJ Raising Expectations Award, an honor given exclusively to current members who have demonstrated exceptional commitment.
In addition to managing NFBNJ’s website, Brian maintains the websites for five additional state affiliates, one local chapter, and two national divisions of the National Federation of the Blind. His expertise in web design and accessibility ensures that these organizations have an effective online presence, allowing them to reach and support their members more efficiently.
Beyond his work with the National Federation of the Blind, Brian is also a founding member of the Berks County Rotaract Club, established in 2025. This club, sponsored by the West Reading-Wyomissing Rotary Club, connects young professionals aged 18 to 40 for volunteer work, networking, and community service projects.
Through his various leadership roles, Brian continues to advocate for accessibility, inclusion, and opportunities for blind and low vision individuals, ensuring that these organizations remain strong and effective in serving their communities.
Appointment to NFB Committee
In 2025, Brian was appointed to serve on the National Federation of the Blind Committee on Federation Website Coordination. This new role highlights his growing influence and expertise in the realm of accessibility and web content management. His extensive experience in maintaining websites for multiple NFB affiliates and divisions, combined with his commitment to ensuring effective communication within the Federation, positions him to play a pivotal role in advancing the online presence of the organization.
As a member of this committee, Brian will contribute to coordinating the Federation’s digital efforts, ensuring that NFB’s online platforms remain accessible, user-friendly, and impactful for its members and the wider community. His appointment further underscores his dedication to promoting accessibility and inclusion within the NFB, as well as his continued leadership in supporting blind and low vision individuals both professionally and in his advocacy work.
Passion for Blind Golf & MABGA
Brian Mackey’s love for golf began at a young age when he joined the Middle Atlantic Blind Golf Association (MABGA) junior golf program, which he attended from 2001 to 2009. Through this program, he developed his skills, confidence, and passion for the sport. In 2010, he graduated from the junior program into MABGA’s adult program, where he continues to participate actively as a golfer.
In addition to being a dedicated player, Brian has taken on a leadership role within MABGA. He currently serves as a board member and webmaster, where he is responsible for maintaining the organization’s website and ensuring smooth communication between members, coaches, and sponsors. While he does not organize tournaments, his behind-the-scenes contributions play a crucial role in supporting MABGA’s mission of making golf accessible to blind and visually impaired individuals.
Brian’s long-standing involvement with MABGA, from junior golfer to adult player and board member, reflects his dedication to both the sport and the blind community. His journey serves as an inspiration to others, demonstrating that with determination and the right support, blind individuals can excel in sports and beyond.
